Etiquette

  • Since the studio is warm, be sure not to overdress. A t-shirt or tank top and shorts are recommended. Out of courtesy to your fellow yogis, please ensure that your yoga clothes are properly laundered.
  • The Ashtanga practice creates heat through the Ujjayi breath and the bandhas. It is not recommended to drink water during your practice as the water will cool the body, but do so if you need to.
  • It is not recommended that you eat before practice. You may have a light snack a couple of hours before, but it is best for the body to not be digesting while you are practicing, since it can make certain postures uncomfortable.
  • If you are new to our studio and/or to Ashtanga yoga, please read the class descriptions before coming to your first class. Be sure that the class you have chosen to attend is appropriate for your level of practice. If you are unsure of the class that is best for you, please ask an instructor.
  • Try to arrive a few minutes early to calm and center yourself. Sun Salutations help to prepare the mind and body at the beginning of every class and ensure a safe and effective practice.
  • Please leave your cellular phone in your car or office if possible. If you must bring your phone with you, we do recommend that you bring it in the studio but please ensure that the ringer is off, as it is disruptive if a phone rings or vibrates during class.
  • Use quiet voices in the lobby, be silent in the hallway and in both front and back studios, respect meditating members by keeping conversations to a minimum and by using a quiet voice. No chit-chat please.
  • Please don't wear perfume or cologne in class. The hot and humid atmosphere in the room intensifies the scent. However, please do remember to apply deodorant or antiperspirant prior to class as required.
  • If you notice any sweat drops on the floor, please wipe off the area around your mat before leaving.
  • Remember to listen to your body. It is better to allow the body to open slowly than to push yourself too far, too quickly. Try to be content with where you are and patient with your practice.
  • If you need to leave before the end of the class, please do so before Savasana. Leaving during Savasana is disruptive.
